Supporting individual therapy, addressing concerns and building coping skills

People may seek individual therapy when they are having difficulty managing persistent worry, low mood, stress, grief, anger, emotional reactions, relationship concerns, or major changes in their circumstances. One-on-one psychotherapy and counseling gives clients an opportunity to discuss these concerns directly with a mental health professional and work on issues affecting their emotional and behavioral functioning. Through telehealth, eligible children, adolescents, and adults located throughout Maryland can participate in virtual therapy and counseling from an appropriate private setting.

How It Works

Individual sessions are centered on the concerns the client brings to treatment and the areas that may require ongoing behavioral health support:

  • Individual psychotherapy addressing current emotional, psychological, or behavioral concerns
  • Supportive psychotherapy for individuals working through difficult circumstances or emotional challenges
  • Mental health counseling focused on concerns affecting day-to-day functioning
  • Identification and practice of coping skills for managing difficult thoughts, emotions, and situations
  • Support with emotional regulation, stress, anger, grief, adjustment, or other presenting concerns when relevant
  • Psychoeducation to help clients understand relevant mental health symptoms, concerns, and treatment approaches

What to Expect

Therapy sessions provide time for the client to describe what has been happening, what feels difficult to manage, and how those concerns are affecting their day-to-day functioning. The discussion may address current circumstances as well as recurring emotional or behavioral patterns that are relevant to the concerns being treated. As sessions continue, the focus can be reviewed and adjusted according to the client’s symptoms, clinical presentation, and treatment needs.
