Managing psychiatric medications, supporting treatment response through follow-up

Starting or continuing psychiatric medication often involves questions about whether symptoms are changing, how treatment is being tolerated, and whether the current approach remains appropriate. Medication management and follow-up provide ongoing clinical review for individuals receiving psychiatric medication as part of their mental health treatment. For eligible clients throughout Maryland, these appointments are conducted through telehealth, allowing medication-related concerns and changes in symptoms to be discussed during a virtual clinical visit.

How It Works

During medication follow-up, the provider reviews the individual’s response to treatment and considers whether changes in care may be clinically appropriate:

  • Review of current psychiatric symptoms and changes since the previous visit
  • Discussion of the individual’s response to prescribed medication
  • Review of reported medication-related effects or concerns
  • Evaluation of whether symptoms remain present, have improved, or have changed
  • Medication management based on the client’s current clinical presentation
  • Ongoing mental health follow-up care to reassess treatment needs over time

What to Expect

During a follow-up appointment, the client discusses how they have been feeling since the previous visit, including changes in symptoms and any medication-related concerns they have noticed. The provider considers this information alongside the client’s current clinical presentation when determining appropriate next steps. Depending on the circumstances, follow-up care may involve continuing the current treatment approach, making a clinically appropriate adjustment, or arranging additional mental health support.
